Areas of Focus (Formerly Goals, Strategies and Activities)

Area of Focus: Instructional Practice - English Language Arts

Measurable Outcome (SMART Goal) Professional Development Budget Monitoring Results
(End of Year)
By June 2026, 70% of students will score a level 3 or higher on the 2025 FAST Assessment. Year-long professional development focused on implementing Reciprocal Teaching, morphological vocabulary instruction, and writing with mentor texts to strengthen instructional practices. Conduct regular classroom observations, teacher self-assessments, PLC documentation, student work analysis, and coaching logs to ensure consistent and effective use of evidence-based practices. Achievements for SMS students in ELA will be 70%.

Evidence-based Interventions/Strategies

Evidence-based Intervention/Strategy 1 Implement vocabulary instruction through morphological analysis by teaching students to deconstruct words into roots, prefixes, and suffixes to enhance their understanding of academic language and improve reading comprehension.
Person(s) Responsible Mrs. Nixson
Deadline 9/26/2025
Evidence-based Intervention/Strategy 2 Implement Writing Across the Curriculum using mentor texts to model effective writing techniques and integrate purposeful writing tasks across content areas to strengthen students' writing skills and deepen content understanding.
Person(s) Responsible ELA Teachers
Deadline 10/31/2025
Evidence-based Intervention/Strategy 3 Implement Reciprocal Teaching as a structured, student-centered dialogue strategy that emphasizes predicting, questioning, clarifying, and summarizing to promote metacognitive thinking and improve reading comprehension.

Mid-Year Reflection

Progress: Is desired progress being made to accomplish the intended outcome for the Area of Focus by the end of the school year? Yes
Evidence: Provide evidence of the implementation challenges the school encountered during the Fall semester. Describe the changes made to address these challenges.
During the Fall semester, the primary implementation challenge was instructional pacing, as many students entered the year without fully developed foundational reading, vocabulary, and writing skills needed to master grade-level standards.

The changes made to address these challenges were:
  • volunteer pull-outs with the lowest quartile students across all grade levels during the instructional day
  • Implementing Extended Learning Camps opportunities
  • Common planning is conducted in Professional Learning Committees
Evidence-based Interventions/Strategies: What was each Intervention/Strategy’s identified strengths and weaknesses?

Cross-Curricular Support with Social Studies Teams & Science Teams

Strengths

  • Reinforces literacy skills in authentic content-area instruction
  • Increases exposure to academic vocabulary and complex texts
  • Promotes shared responsibility for literacy across departments
Weaknesses
  • Inconsistent implementation across classrooms
  • Limited instructional time due to content pacing concerns
Volunteer Pull-Outs for Lowest Quartile Students
Strengths
  • Provides targeted, small-group intervention
  • Addresses the foundational skill gap efficiently
Weaknesses
  • Inconsistent availability of volunteers
Extended Learning Camps
Strengths
  • Extends instructional time for remediation and acceleration
  • allows for data-driven instruction
Weakness
  • Attendance due to transportation issues
Professional Learning Communities
Strengths
  • Aligns instruction and expectations
  • Supports data-driven instructional planning
Weakness
  • Limited time for deep analysis
  • Implementation varies without consistent follow-up

New Actions: Describe any new actions that are needed to accomplish the intended outcome for the Area of Focus.
The school will implement modeling, coaching, and observation cycles to ensure consistent implementation of evidence-based instructional strategies. Walkthroughs and targeted feedback will be used to improve pacing and student mastery of standards.
Additional Reflections (optional): Please add any additional reflections for this Area of Focus.
