High Quality Instruction

Early Warning Indicators

Using the data below, describe all intervention strategies employed by the school to improve the academic performance of students identified by the early warning system.

DBMS staff reaches out to appropriate staff members for attendance concerns, utilizes MTSS (discipline, academic and attendance concerns), monitors FOCUS behavior reports, incorporates Extended Learning Opportunities, schedules parent/teacher/student conferences, progress monitors students' performance through interim reports, report cards, Guidance referral/support, PM & Common Formative Assessments and Professional Learning Community teacher collaboration to provide remediation instructional strategies to address low proficiency. We use the decision tree for appropriately placing students in reading classes that focus on their needs for reading interventions.

Math
Interventions used to improve student academic performance in Mathematics achievement starts with students being identified by teachers, administration, guidance or support staff for MTSS (Multi-Tiered Supports Systems), and RTI (Response to Intervention). After students are identified as needing mathematics interventions, a variety of methods are employed to address their needs. Teachers are involved in Professional Learning Communities (PLCs) on a weekly basis.  During PLCs, tier I standards-based classroom instruction is addressed.  Teachers share best practices through data driven discussions and receive feedback from administrators who are a part of the PLCs. Daily and weekly formative assessments aligned to learning standards and daily instructional target are implemented as a part of the teaching and learning process.  Formative assessments include but are not limited to interactive journals, exit slips, tickets out the door, academic games, graphic organizers, electronic and paper-based quizzes. Differentiated Instruction through math center rotations/stations based on skill, need, and interest for teacher-directed instruction and technology integration for remediation, and enrichment purposes. Performance Matters will be used as supplementary technology integration support tools along with iReady. Students also track their progress through goal setting and maintaining data charts.  Students will partake in the FAST PM1 (Progress Monitoring) and PM2 and depending on how they score, students will receive additional intervention through push-ins or pull-outs with the Math Coach who will be working with students by utilizing strategies to increase students’ success in math.  Extended Learning Opportunities will be available through tutoring and push in/pull outs.

Social Studies
In effort to maximize the learning process when instruction does not yield the expected outcome, we utilize various interventions to help our students strengthen those weakened areas.  An intervention for a tested area such as Civics, we provid after school tutoring, pull-outs, and extended learning opportunities through a Civics Camp that we offer depending upon funding.  This is done to help prepare our 7th grade students for the Civics EOC.  Social Studies teachers are working with our Instructional Support Facilitator from Secondary Education and Civics teachers collaborate through PLC's by sharing best practices through data driven conversations. Social Studies is supporting ELA by incorporating Reading Across the Curriculum strategies into the classroom.

Science
To maximize the learning process when instruction does not yield the expected outcome, we utilize a variety of interventions to help our student strengthen those weakened areas.  Science utilizes hands-on learning opportunities to engage students with standards being taught.  Teachers are attending weekly Professional Learning Communities to share best practice through data driven discussions focused on Common Formative Assessments.  Science teachers are working with our Instructional Support Facilitator from Secondary Education.  Students will be utilizing Performance Matters to ensure understanding of key standards.  Students are awarded the opportunity to participate in Extended Learning Opportunities provided through the school.  Science is supporting ELA by incorporating Reading Across the Curriculum strategies into the classroom.

English Language Art
We use the decision tree for appropriately placing students in reading classes focused on their needs of reading interventions.  Teachers for ELA and Reading classes are utlizing programs in HMH.  Teachers are utlizing Reading Across the Curriculum reading strategies. iReady is being utlized in the classroom. In Language Arts student will take the FAST PM1 (Progress Monitoring) and PM2 and depending on how they score students will receive additional intervention through push-ins or pull-outs with the Reading Coach. Extended Learning Opportunities that will take place during and after-school to increase student achievement in reading and writing. Teachers are involved in Professional Learning Communities (PLCs) on a weekly basis.  During PLCs, tier I standards-based classroom instruction is addressed.  Teachers share best practices through data driven discussions and receive feedback from administrators who are a part of the PLCs.

Areas of Focus (Formerly Goals, Strategies and Activities)

Area of Focus: ELA

Measurable Outcome (SMART Goal) Professional Development Budget Monitoring Results
(End of Year)
The percentage of ELA students scoring proficient or higher in grades 6-8 will increase from 46% to 50% by the end of June 2026 as measured by ELA Statewide Assessment (FAST). Teachers will be receiving Professional Development on the key reading strategies being implemented across the curriculars. The area of focus will be monitored through different platforms such iReady Diagnostic, FAST Assessment (PM 1 & PM 2), Mid workshop assessments (Read 180, The Code), student products, Jr. Buck Engagement monthly data chats with teachers/students, students' portfolios & observation.

Evidence-based Interventions/Strategies

Evidence-based Intervention/Strategy 1 Students will be monitored through reading class (Read 180, The Code, ELLevation) and through assessment given in HMH Into Lit ELA classes. Students will also be monitored through PM 1 and PM 2 data as well as iReady reading data.
Person(s) Responsible Administration/Teachers
Deadline 5/29/2026
Evidence-based Intervention/Strategy 2 Students in grades 6-8 will receive Reading Across Curriculum, Thinking Map, and Reciprocal Teaching strategies in all curriculum classes. Students who receive reading intervention will be placed into reading classes based on level of reading which creates heterogenous grade level classes based on reading deficiency.
Person(s) Responsible Administration/Teachers
Deadline 5/29/2026
Evidence-based Intervention/Strategy 3 Teachers will implement three focused reading/writing strategies that will be incorporated weekly into lessons. Monitoring through student portfolios, student products, iReady and Cornell notetaking for studying.

Mid-Year Reflection

Progress: Is desired progress being made to accomplish the intended outcome for the Area of Focus by the end of the school year? Yes
Evidence: Provide evidence of the implementation challenges the school encountered during the Fall semester. Describe the changes made to address these challenges.
FAST PM 2 data demonstrates that our push-in Informational Text Guided Reading has been effective.  The challenges we’ve encountered during fall semester shows the need for us to continue addressing the following ELA subcategories:
Reading Across Genres (PM 2 data of students meeting proficiency: 6th grade-38%, 7th grade-42%, and 8th grade-43%).
Reading Prose and Poetry (PM 2 data of students meeting proficiency: 6th grade-20%, 7th grade-34%, and 8th grade -29%).
Informational Text (PM2 data of students meeting proficiency: 6th grade-19%, 7th grade-25% and 8th Grade-30%.

*To address these areas of concerns we have started to implement Poetry Analysis TPCASTT and Reading Across Genres in Social Studies. Science will maintain Informational Text Guided Reading.

Evidence-based Interventions/Strategies: What was each Intervention/Strategy’s identified strengths and weaknesses?
Intervention/Strategy's Strength: Teacher willingness, active engagement, celebrating success, and faculty belief in culture. Other areas of strength are District Support, ELA achievement showing steady improvement (from 38% in 2023 to 46% in 2025), and having a blueprint for interventions/Extended Learning Opportunities (ELO).

Intervention/Strategy's Weaknesses: Planning but opportunity with or to Plan(time) continues to be an area of grow or needs for improvement. Teachers watch teacher Opportunity in monthly Rigor Walks. Enjoying the early process(messy)/Productive struggle. Lastly, learning new textbooks science curriculum Opportunity a Science PD Rollout for school.

New Actions: Describe any new actions that are needed to accomplish the intended outcome for the Area of Focus.
*To optimize learning in Reading we will be implementing/using the iReady platform in Social Studies as well as the ELA courses. Additionally, in Elective content areas of art, computers and foreign language.
*Critical priority will be implemented in supporting our non-ELA teachers with instructional support(s) and monitoring of assessments from topics.
*Pullouts will be conducted for students who are 10 points away and who dropped from PM1 to PM2.
*We will continue walkthroughs and up the incentives for challenges (iReady). Also, for struggling readers in the ESE subgroup and ELA beginning the week of January 16th we will start our literacy lab.
