High Quality Instruction

Early Warning Indicators

Using the data below, describe all intervention strategies employed by the school to improve the academic performance of students identified by the early warning system.

Wingate Oaks Center: Comprehensive Intervention Framework

Wingate Oaks Center (WOC) is a specialized day school committed to providing unique and individualized services for students experiencing intellectual challenges. In alignment with its mission to promote academic and social success, WOC implements a comprehensive, two-fold system of interventions grounded in evidence-based practices.

Academic Interventions
To support student learning, WOC employs research-based instructional strategies designed to maximize engagement and accessibility. These strategies include the Gradual Release of Responsibility Model, differentiated instruction, and the principles of Universal Design for Learning (UDL). Teachers integrate the use of realia and manipulatives to enhance hands-on learning experiences, while phonological awareness training is embedded through the Unique Learning System. In addition, WOC utilizes the Develop Inspire Grow (DIG) Pre-K curriculum and supplements instruction with the Creative Curriculum, ensuring that students have access to a wide range of developmentally appropriate, high-quality learning opportunities.

Behavioral Interventions
Recognizing the importance of self-regulation and executive functioning in overall student development, WOC implements evidence-based behavioral practices across the school environment. These include a consistent school-wide behavior plan, the use of reinforcers to encourage positive behaviors, first/then strategies to increase predictability, and social narratives to support behavioral modeling. Additionally, students are provided with access to self-selected sensory input through designated spaces such as the Snoezelen room, which fosters emotional regulation and engagement.

Collaborative Data-Driven Practices
WOC places a strong emphasis on collaboration and data-driven decision-making. Monthly data chats provide structured opportunities for administrators, ESE specialists, instructional coaches, and teachers to analyze student performance and determine necessary interventions, adaptations, or modifications. Professional Learning Community (PLC) meetings further strengthen this process, as teachers engage in the exchange of best practices and strategies to improve instruction and student outcomes.

Family Engagement
WOC is equally committed to building strong partnerships with families. The school regularly shares best practices during Parent Night events, equipping parents with tools and strategies to reinforce student learning and behavioral supports at home. This collaborative approach ensures that students receive consistent, coordinated support across both school and family environments.

Through this multifaceted framework, Wingate Oaks Center exemplifies its dedication to advancing the academic and behavioral success of students with intellectual challenges by fostering a culture of collaboration, innovation, and family engagement.

Mid-Year Reflection

Progress: Is desired progress being made to accomplish the intended outcome for the Area of Focus by the end of the school year? Yes
Evidence: Provide evidence of the implementation challenges the school encountered during the Fall semester. Describe the changes made to address these challenges.
During the Fall semester at Wingate Oaks Center, several implementation challenges emerged as we worked to increase students’ use of targeted core words across settings.
Implementation Challenges:
  • Inconsistent use of Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC): Walkthrough data indicated variability in adult modeling of AAC/core words during shared reading and center rotations. Modeling was stronger during the literacy block than in the play-based centers.
  • Staff Confidence & Fluency: Some teachers and ESPs expressed hesitation about navigating AAC devices in real time, which slows authentic language modeling.
  • Device/Board Accessibility: Core word boards were not consistently accessible in all centers, limiting spontaneous communication opportunities.
  • Data Collection Gaps: Teacher communication logs varied in quality and frequency, resulting in incomplete bi-weekly monitoring data.
  • Prompt Dependency: Early data indicated that many students required full verbal or gestural prompts and had limited independent initiations.
Evidence Sources:
  • Administrative walkthrough look-fors (AAC modeling frequency).
  • Teacher lesson plans and center rotation schedules.
  • Bi-weekly communication logs.
  • Monthly data chat summaries.
  • SLP service documentation.
Changes Made to Address Challenges:
  • Embedded explicit AAC modeling expectations into walkthrough feedback cycles.
  • Conducted targeted Core Word PD refreshers focused on modeling during play-based instruction.
  • Created laminated, portable core word boards for every center and added individualized boards to student cubbies.
  • Developed a standardized AAC data collection template to ensure consistency across classrooms.
  • Implemented SLP-teacher co-modeling sessions during literacy block and dramatic play to increase staff fluency.
  • Established a standing AAC spotlight segment during monthly data chats to review student exemplars and trends.
These changes resulted in increased visibility of AAC modeling during both structured and unstructured learning times.

Evidence-based Interventions/Strategies: What was each Intervention/Strategy’s identified strengths and weaknesses?
Evidence-Based Interventions/Strategies: Strengths & Weaknesses
Strategy 1: Teacher and SLP model use of AAC devices/core word boards while speaking.
Strengths:
  • Increased student exposure to consistent language models.
  • Improved alignment between speech therapy and classroom instruction.
  • Enhanced adult awareness of natural opportunities for communication.
  • Notable increase in prompted core-word usage during shared reading.
Weaknesses:
  • Modeling sometimes felt scripted rather than authentic.
  • Inconsistency during high-transition times (arrival, clean-up).
  • Some ESPs required ongoing coaching to maintain fidelity.
  • Limited generalization during independent center play early in the semester.
Strategy 2: Provide individual and classroom-based core word boards across environments.
Strengths:
  • Increased accessibility supported spontaneous communication.
  • Reduced wait time for device sharing.
  • Supported nonverbal students in peer interactions.
  • Improved cross-setting consistency (literacy → centers).
Weaknesses:
  • Boards are occasionally misplaced or not returned to designated areas.
  • Some students are visually overstimulated by larger boards.
  • Teachers required additional guidance on selecting targeted words aligned to the instructional theme.
New Actions: Describe any new actions that are needed to accomplish the intended outcome for the Area of Focus.
New Actions Needed to Achieve Intended Outcome
To reach 80% mastery by May 2026, the following new actions are required:
  1. Fidelity Monitoring Tool: Develop and implement a simple AAC fidelity checklist for bi-weekly walkthroughs.
  2. Peer Modeling Expansion: Introduce peer-to-peer modeling routines during centers to increase naturalistic use.
  3. Core Word of the Week Focus: Narrow to 2–3 focus words per week with visual emphasis in classrooms.
  4. Video Coaching Cycles: Record short modeling clips to use during PD for reflection and calibration.
  5. Family Engagement Component: Send home a “Core Word Spotlight” communication to encourage reinforcement across home settings.
  6. Prompt Fading Plan: Establish structured prompting hierarchies to intentionally move students toward independence.
  7. Data Precision: Require documentation of independent vs. prompted usage in logs to better track progress toward independence.
Additional Reflections (optional): Please add any additional reflections for this Area of Focus.
Professional Development & Monitoring Plan Professional Development Implemented
  • AAC foundational training
  • Core Word integration during literacy and centers
  • Co-modeling sessions with SLP
  • Data collection calibration training
Monitoring Structure
  • Bi-weekly data collection
  • Monthly data chats
  • Quarterly progress reviews
  • Mastery review target: May 2026
Mid-year data indicate growth in prompted core-word usage and improved adult modeling fidelity; however, greater focus on independence and generalization across settings is necessary to meet the May 2026 benchmark.

Wingate Oaks Center continues to demonstrate commitment to building language-rich, AAC-supported environments aligned with our mission to empower students with disabilities to grow academically, socially, and communicatively. While foundational systems are now in place, the second semester will prioritize fidelity, independence, and generalization to ensure sustainable communication growth for our Pre-K learners.
