Early Warning Indicators

Using the data below, describe all intervention strategies employed by the school to improve the academic performance of students identified by the early warning system.

North Lauderdale Elementary employs a comprehensive, multi-tiered system of supports (MTSS) to address the academic, behavioral, and attendance needs of students identified through the Early Warning System (EWS). Interventions are designed to be proactive, data-driven, and responsive to the unique needs of each student, with the goal of improving achievement, reducing barriers to success, and increasing promotion and retention outcomes.

Attendance Interventions:
Chronic absenteeism remains one of the strongest predictors of low achievement. To address this, the school implements targeted attendance initiatives, including frequent communication with families, attendance contracts, and social worker support for families facing barriers such as transportation or health-related issues. Students are recognized through incentives such as certificates, class rewards, and recognition events for improved or perfect attendance. Early notification systems ensure that parents are alerted when students reach threshold levels of absences so corrective action can be taken swiftly.

Behavioral Interventions:
To reduce suspensions and promote a positive school culture, the school employs Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS), restorative practices, and mentorship programs. Students with repeated infractions receive individualized behavior support plans with clear goals and progress monitoring. Staff mentors conduct daily or weekly check-ins with at-risk students to reinforce positive behavior and provide consistent encouragement. These proactive supports reduce the need for exclusionary discipline and help students remain engaged in learning.

Academic Interventions in ELA and Math:
Students demonstrating deficiencies in literacy or mathematics receive layered instructional supports. For reading, K–3 students identified with substantial reading deficiencies are provided intensive daily phonics instruction using UFLI Foundations, along with small-group interventions focused on fluency and comprehension. In mathematics, students receive targeted instruction, incorporating hands-on activities, digital programs, and re-teaching of priority standards. Teachers utilize ongoing progress monitoring, including FAST and STAR assessments, to adjust instructional strategies and ensure growth. Instructional coaches collaborate with teachers to model lessons, support small-group interventions, and track student performance.

Retention and Promotion Support:
Given the number of students retained in the previous year, the school has intensified efforts to prevent repeated retention. Students identified at risk of retention receive personalized learning plans, increased monitoring, and access to summer academic programs focused on literacy. Families are engaged through ongoing communication to build their capacity in supporting student learning at home.

Schoolwide Structures:
All interventions are embedded within the school’s MTSS framework, with daily intervention blocks scheduled across all grade levels. Professional Learning Communities (PLCs) meet regularly to review EWS and academic data, collaborate on instructional strategies, and monitor student progress. Instructional coaching cycles provide targeted professional development to teachers in areas such as phonics instruction and math conceptual development. Additionally, the school maintains a strong focus on celebrating growth and progress, recognizing students for academic improvement, attendance, and positive behavior to reinforce motivation and engagement.

Through these coordinated strategies, North Lauderdale Elementary ensures that students flagged by the Early Warning System receive the targeted, evidence-based support necessary to improve academic performance, develop positive behaviors, and maintain consistent attendance. The alignment of interventions with MTSS, coupled with strong family and community partnerships, creates the conditions for all students to succeed and for the school to achieve its long-term goal of academic excellence.
