Early Warning Indicators

Using the data below, describe all intervention strategies employed by the school to improve the academic performance of students identified by the early warning system.

trategies to Improve Academic Performance of Students Identified by the Early Warning System

Attendance Intervention Strategies:

  • Maintain regular communication with parents via ParentLink, emails, and phone calls.
  • Parents are encouraged to notify the attendance clerk by phone or email to excuse their child's absence.
  • Teachers are responsible for accurately recording attendance.
  • Teachers, counselors, administrators, support specialists, coaches, mentors, and school social workers follow up with students regarding attendance concerns.
  • Late students are required to report to RISE to receive a pass for class.
  • Students with excessive tardies will be assigned time in RISE (a class period or a full day) as outlined in the Positive Behavior Plan.
  • Students with significant attendance issues will be referred to RtI (Response to Intervention).

Discipline Intervention Strategies:
  • Life skills and wellness exercises are conducted regularly during Study Hall.
  • Grade-level assemblies are held to discuss state, district, and school discipline policies, expectations, and consequences.
  • Students who consistently struggle with behavior issues are referred to RtI for additional support.

Extended Learning Intervention Strategies:
  • Saturday tutoring sessions are available to strengthen students' understanding of core subjects.
  • Ongoing credit recovery opportunities are offered in core courses.
  • In-school academic support is provided for subjects like Algebra, Geometry, and English Language Arts (ELA).
  • Specialized tutoring is available for English Language Learners and students with disabilities to address their specific needs.

Post-Secondary/College and Career Readiness Intervention Strategies:

Areas of Focus (Formerly Goals, Strategies and Activities)

Area of Focus: Vocabulary Instruction for ELA/Reading Proficiency

Measurable Outcome (SMART Goal) Professional Development Budget Monitoring Results
(End of Year)
By Spring 2026, ELA/Reading proficiency for students in 9th and 10th grade will increase from 50% to 55% through targeted instruction, data-driven interventions, and ongoing progress monitoring. Science of Reading, Instructional Stations, Engagement Activities Benchmark Assessments through Performance Matters will be used weekly to monitor progress and adjust instruction. Data Chats between students, teachers, and instructional leaders will be conducted quarterly to set goals and reflect on progress. Quarterly CFA's will be used to measure student growth as we progress through the school year.

Evidence-based Interventions/Strategies

Evidence-based Intervention/Strategy 1 Implement Tier 2 and Tier 3 supports for students below proficiency using small group instruction and targeted skill-building.
Person(s) Responsible T. Smith/K. Ramos
Deadline 12/10/2025
Evidence-based Intervention/Strategy 2 Use common formative assessment data to tailor lessons to student needs, focusing on the lowest reporting categories including reading informational text, reading across genres, and reading prose and poetry.
Person(s) Responsible T. Smith/ K. Ramos
Deadline 10/24/2025
Evidence-based Intervention/Strategy 3 Collaborate with other departments to integrate reading strategies into science, social studies, and electives.

Mid-Year Reflection

Progress: Is desired progress being made to accomplish the intended outcome for the Area of Focus by the end of the school year? Yes
Evidence: Provide evidence of the implementation challenges the school encountered during the Fall semester. Describe the changes made to address these challenges.
ELA teachers were expected to embed explicit morphology instruction during the Fall semester, focusing on prefixes, suffixes, roots, and connotation/denotation following professional development.
  1. Walkthrough data, lesson plan reviews, and PLC discussions showed inconsistent Tier 1 implementation across classrooms.
  2. Most teachers attempted morphology instruction but faced challenges such as:
·       Lack of clarity on explicit and systematic routines.
·       Inconsistent pacing.
·       Limited alignment between morphology instruction and grade-level texts.
  1. In some classrooms, morphology was taught in isolation rather than embedded in authentic reading and writing tasks, which reduced its instructional impact.
Evidence-based Interventions/Strategies: What was each Intervention/Strategy’s identified strengths and weaknesses?
Intervention 1: Professional Development On Morphology
  • Strength: Increased teacher awareness of the importance of morphology for vocabulary development and reading comprehension
  • Weakness: Limited follow-up support reduced transfer from PD to practice
Intervention 2: PLC Collaboration & Data Review
  • Strength: Allowed teachers to identify trends in student performance related to vocabulary and word meaning
  • Weakness: Not all PLCs consistently examined student work tied directly to morphology standards
New Actions: Describe any new actions that are needed to accomplish the intended outcome for the Area of Focus.
  • Increase the frequency and intentionality of coaching cycles focused specifically on vocabulary and word meaning standards
  • Align ELO assignments to the ongoing practice of Morphology in all ELA classes, focusing on denotation and connotation. Consistent morphology practice in ELA classes supports the development of students' vocabulary comprehension and application.
Additional Reflections (optional): Please add any additional reflections for this Area of Focus.
To further address the identified area of focus, Deerfield Beach High School implemented a schoolwide disciplinary literacy approach that integrates ELA strategies across all content areas. Teachers utilized CommonLit and grade-level, standards-aligned texts to reinforce reading comprehension, academic vocabulary, and analytical thinking within subject-specific instruction. The Bucks Core Four framework (Pre-Read, First Read, Close Read, Post Read) was implemented as a consistent Tier 1 instructional structure to support student access to complex texts and to promote shared literacy expectations across disciplines. Content-area teachers incorporated strategies such as structured annotation, graphic organizers, and interactive word walls to reinforce vocabulary development and application of morphology skills introduced in ELA courses. Implementation expectations were reinforced through PLC collaboration, lesson planning, and instructional walkthrough feedback to ensure literacy practices are consistently embedded across classrooms. This cross-curricular approach supports the development of transferable literacy skills and strengthens student performance in ELA and other tested content areas.
