Attucks Middle School: Targeted Support for At-Risk Students

Attucks Middle School employs multiple strategies to support students flagged by the Early Warning System:

• Attendance Intervention: Guidance counselors identify chronically absent students bi-weekly and engage families through conferences and follow-ups to stress the importance of regular attendance.

• Learning Strategies Class: Required for students with disabilities who are not meeting growth goals or score Level 1 in Reading. Instruction focuses on IEP goals and grade-level content via the ESLS department.

• Academic Support Labs: Available for students struggling in Reading and Math offering targeted instruction during the school day.

• Extended Learning: Afterschool programs (Unity4Teens)camps provide academic support and enrichment for at-risk students

• Peer Mentoring: Mentoring Tomorrow’s Leaders supports incoming 6th graders with academic and social guidance while also providing peer to peer mentorship to grades 7-8. 5000 role models also fosters supportive relationships between students and community as they serve as mentors and role models to increase success academically and socially.

• Behavior Incentives: Attucks promote positive behavior through character bucks and student of the month incentives to reduce suspensions and support consistent attendance.

• Latinos in Action (LIA): Empowers Hispanic students to mentor peers and younger students while providing academic and emotional support.

• ESSER Recovery Class: Students needing credit recovery are pulled from electives twice weekly for focused instruction in core subjects
