Gulfstream Academy of Hallandale Beach K-8 implements the Benchmark Universe program for students in kindergarten through fifth grade. This curriculum challenges students with rigorous, vertically aligned units that build upon shared themes across grade levels, allowing learners to thrive and demonstrate growth.
To support guided reading instruction, the school maintains a Scholastic Book Room, providing teachers with targeted lessons and materials for small group instruction in grades K–5. Additionally, Gulfstream Academy proudly identifies as an iReady school, where students receive personalized lessons based on diagnostic assessments that pinpoint specific areas for growth.
Beginning in grades K–2, students will engage with the UFLI Foundations program to strengthen their foundational reading skills. For students requiring additional support, interventions are provided using Benchmark Universe materials, and the school is introducing the SIPPS intervention system to further enhance literacy outcomes.
In grades 6–8, System 44 will be used as an intervention resource within Intensive Reading classes. Teachers will deliver instruction in small groups tailored to each student’s level and provide additional support through weekly double-dose sessions for struggling readers.
Remediation is a key focus at Gulfstream Academy. After analyzing assessment data, the school develops strategic remediation plans to help students reach proficiency. A school-wide initiative is underway to strengthen vocabulary, including explicit instruction in Greek and Latin roots and the advanced vocabulary embedded in Benchmark lessons. These efforts aim to boost students’ confidence and comprehension during reading.
To ensure targeted support in both Reading and Math, students are placed in specialized classes designed for small group instruction, allowing for personalized learning in a less intimidating environment. Through these comprehensive strategies, Gulfstream Academy is committed to improving student achievement on the FAST assessments.
